Attendance and Truancy Intervention SAM (School Attendance Matters)

  • My name is Sherry Saxton and I am the attendance liaison at Highland Park Middle School.  Students who avoid school often have problems adults would have difficulty managing. It is my job to learn the student's story and help his/her family connect with professionals here at school or in the community.   If attendance does not improve,  it is also my job to move the student to a SART (Student Attendance Review Team) hearing with the Ramsey County, and if need be to truancy court.

It is the goal of the Saint Paul Public Schools and the Ramsey County Attorney's Office to end truancy. Since the partnership began in 1995, SPPS has worked in cooperation with the Ramsey County Attorney's Office to reduce the number of students who go to court for truancy. In addition the district has identified a series of indicators and targets known through research and practice to affect student achievement and has set specific targets aimed at improving student attendance and lowering the drop out rate. Since middle school is the gateway to high school and post secondary education; it is so important that our  middle school students attend school well.   With the help of their parents, the SAM program can improve the attendance of students with excessive absence and reduce both truancy and the opportunity for juvenile crime.

SAM is a step program adopted as a partnership between the Ramsey County Attorney's Office and St. Paul Public Schools. The County Attorney's Office works in collaboration with school officials, law enforcement and social services to intervene early in the truancy cycle.

Thank you for keeping good school attendance a priority in your home.
