Athletic Policies

Highland Park Middle School Athletic Policies

Philosophy/Goals:
The HPMS athletics department believes that sport programs should provide opportunities to develop skills, practice teamwork, and have fun with a goal to win.  HPMS coaches are also teaching responsibility, sportsmanship, social skills, and hard work.

We typically have a large number of students who participate in athletics.  Due to space, safety, and budget concerns we will be having a tryout and cutting process for all sports depending on the number of students who register.  The athletic department is asking for volunteers to help coach our sports.  If we recieve the appopriete volunteers we will be able to keep more players.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact the athletic director.

Expectations and Guidelines

Once the player is notified they are on the team, they are expected to attend every practice during the season.  Practices are from 2:15 – 3:45pm, M-F.

Below is HPMS’ attendance policy:

  • 1st unexcused absence – conference with player and call home
  • 2nd unexcused absence – miss one game
  • 3rd unexcused absence – suspended from team

For an excused absence, the player should provide a note from their parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence.

We support academic success and growth.  If a player is not fulfilling academic responsibilities, coaches will follow the protocol above.   In the case of serious offences the athletic directors or administration may remove a player from the team immediately.

Verbal abuse or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated during any Highland event, home or away.  Parents/guardians and players are expected to show awesome sportsmanship throughout the year.  If unsportsmanlike behavior occurs, the individual will be told to leave the event and will not be allowed to attend any additional games.  We want to provide a positive experience for players and spectators.

Academic Eligibility:

  • All students remain eligible until they accrue two Ns (determined by end of quarter grades).
  • Student athletes that are truant from class will not be allowed to participate.
  • Student athletes must be in school by 10:30 am in order to participate in practice or games.
