Family Engagement Plan
2025-26 Family Engagement Plan
The Family Engagement Plan (FEP) is organized into four impact areas. We will be working together this year to build positive and goal-oriented relationships in each area. Families and staff at school developed this plan together.
Welcoming Environment
Our school has staff member(s) available for families to discuss this plan and ask questions

Our school communicates with families in many ways.
- Families at HPMS are sent a weekly e-mailed & texted bulletin called the Scots’ Scoop that is also translated in multiple languages via the online service Smore. The Scot’s Scoop explains events and announcements that are happening around the building, e.g: new information, celebrations, Flipside, athletics, family information, teacher requests, volunteer opportunities, Family Engagement meetings and opportunities, SCIP, events, & old yet relevant news.
- Families can monitor student grades and attendance through Schoology and the parent Campus portal. All 5th grade families are encouraged to register and can be trained in Schoology at 6th grade registration (Spring of each year).
- Teachers stay connected with families through Schoology, phone, e-mail, Parent Portal (Campus), Google messaging, and conferences.
- All school events are announced through Messages XR emails, text, and at times phone calls, along with the Scots’ Scoop family weekly newsletter (via Smore). All Messages XR and Smore communications are translatable via the Smore newsletter service that Highland Park Middle School and SPPS uses.
- Our school website is updated with important information on a regular basis. We encourage families to visit it often at http://highlandms.spps.org
- When families call, email or send a note, we do our best to respond within 24 hours.
- Family Community Connection (FCC) meetings are held monthly in the evenings or mornings, with both in person and virtual meetings. Meetings address community building, principal updates, upcoming events and an educational topics such as: Adolescence, Self-Esteem, MYP/Grading Policy, Personalized Learning (iPads), utilizing Schoology and Transitioning to High School. FCC meetings also address stakeholder input on the Family Engagement Plan, the family-school Compact, Title 1, and other topics where input of families is needed. Presentations are uploaded (linked in) on the school website and in the weekly family newsletter (under Family Engagement section).
- Office staff are available during school hours to answer questions.

The achievement gap, or rather the “opportunity gap,” between students of color and white students in Saint Paul Public Schools is unacceptable. Our school is working to change practices and systems by identifying the barriers that make it harder for students of color to succeed and for their families to support their learning. For more about our work on racial equity, contact:
- Staff will continue to attend SPPS Racial Diversity/Equity Series professional development.
- Staff will continue to learn the most effective ways to integrate personalized learning into the daily routine of their students’ classroom experiences.
- Culturally relevant instruction is a focus for teachers at HPMS: rigor, relevance, realness and responsiveness.
- Data teams report out specific strategies used to improve scores of all student achievement levels.
- With the school-wide data coach, PLCs & teams will look at student work through the lens of equity and application of meaningful data. Teams will utilize data frequently to drive instruction and relevancy for students.
- Discipline plans that are specific to student needs to cultivate strategies and positive student outcomes, behaviorally, social-emotionally and academically.
- Admin and Behavior Intervention Specialists follow the district’s Student Rights & Responsibilities handbook
